FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Clearwire Brings Wireless Broadband Internet Service to Daytona Beach, Frees Customers from Confines of Traditional Internet AccessHigh-Tech Company Announces Alliance with DBCC as its “First Customer;” Provides Funding to Help PACE Center for Girls Graduates Achieve College Dreams
DAYTONA BEACH , Fla. (Jan. 21, 2005) — Clearwire officially launched its wireless broadband Internet service in the Daytona Beach area today when company and community leaders cut through a ribbon of coaxial cable and telephone cord at a celebratory luncheon at Daytona Beach Community College’s Southeast Museum of Photography. In celebration of the launch, Clearwire announced an innovative alliance with Daytona Beach Community College and unveiled a partnership with PACE Center for Girls to provide young women with the resources needed to attend college. “Daytona Beach now has a better choice for broadband Internet service that’s simple, affordable and flexible,” said Eileen Maxwell, Clearwire’s general manager for Daytona Beach. “Clearwire will break down the barriers of traditional broadband service, offering consumers high-speed Internet service without wires,” added Clark Peterson, Clearwire’s president of major markets. Peterson, Maxwell, Daytona Beach Community College Executive Vice President Dr. Rand Spiwak, PACE Center Executive Director Carol Wick, Daytona Beach City Commissioner Rick Shiver and Chamber Vice President of Business Development Jim McCroskey then cut through the cables with several pair of large wire cutters. The company also announced an alliance with Daytona Beach Community College, making the institution Clearwire’s first local customer. As part of the unique business alliance, Clearwire will provide state-of-the-art modems and wireless broadband Internet service to the college for the benefit of DBCC students and staff. “Clearwire has developed a strategic alliance with DBCC, allowing us to use a portion of their unused radio spectrum on which we broadcast our secure Internet signal,” said Maxwell. “As part of our alliance with DBCC, Clearwire will provide its state-of-the-art modems and service to the college, so the staff and students have fast and reliable Internet access for planning, research and learning.” In addition, Clearwire announced a local partnership with Volusia/Flagler PACE Center for Girls. The company will provide PACE with a $2,500 emergency education assistance fund to help PACE program graduates pay for ancillary college or vocational school needs, such as books, class fees and uniforms, which are not covered by traditional government tuition assistance programs. Clearwire has developed a next-generation, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) technology that allows customers to connect to the Internet via a signal sent across the airwaves rather than across wires. The company sends the signal from a transmitter to a specially developed receiver box that plugs into the customer’s computer instead of connecting to traditional coaxial cable or telephone wires. Customers simply plug the receiver into a wall outlet and into their computer to gain high-speed access to the Internet from any room inside or outside the home. “Clearwire is ‘next-generation broadband’ — broadband Internet service delivered to the consumer in a manner that is easier to get, set up and use than any other option currently offered,” said Maxwell. “You can buy the service at select local retailers, take it home, set it up and be online in minutes. It’s plug-and-play installation — no need for a technician to come into your home and no need to load software onto your computer to make it work. In addition, you can move the service from one room to another inside your home — work in your home office, in the kitchen, or outside on your patio. As long as you have access to a power source, you can be online.” Clearwire service is currently available to approximately 45,000 homes in the Daytona Beach area, and the service will expand to cover a total of 65,000 in the coming months. The service is sold at several authorized retailers in the area, as well as at Clearwire’s temporary sales center in the Sunshine Park Mall, located at 2400 South Ridgewood Avenue, Suite 5, in South Daytona. The Daytona Beach coverage area, including Ormond Beach, Holly Hill, Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Shores and Port Orange, is the latest area to receive Clearwire’s service as part of its nationwide expansion. Clearwire is led by Craig McCaw, one of the early pioneers in providing cellular phone service in the U.S. in the early 1980s. His company, McCaw Cellular, grew to be the largest U.S. cellular service provider and was later acquired by AT&T. Clearwire drew national attention in the summer of 2004 when it announced it would deploy wireless broadband technology in select markets across the country. Since then, the company has moved on an aggressive timeline. In late August, Clearwire launched in Jacksonville, its first city. In late October, computer chip maker Intel announced that it had become a “significant” investor in Clearwire. In addition, Clearwire and Intel announced they were collaborating to develop WiMax technology, which offers greater range and speed than Wi-Fi, a wireless technology popular today in home and office networks. Just last month, the company launched service in Abilene, Texas, and St. Cloud, Minn. Daytona Beach is Clearwire’s first market launch of 2005. It is estimated that at least 70 percent of residences in the U.S. do not currently subscribe to the Internet through a broadband connection because of cost or availability barriers. Clearwire plans an aggressive buildout throughout the United States to offer consumers a simpler, more flexible and cost-effective solution. Tests of the radio receiver show Clearwire provides service at up to 1.5 million bits per second (Mbps), which is comparable to DSL service and 25 times faster than typical dial-up connections. “We chose Daytona Beach because it is eager to attract new,
progressive companies and a diverse population we believe is ready to
embrace new technology,” said Peterson. “We’re excited about
providing the community reliable, broadband-speed Internet access with
flexibility they’ve never had before. Clearwire eliminates the
limitations of traditional broadband services, offering a more
consumer-friendly Internet experience.” About ClearwireClearwire is a provider of reliable, wireless, high-speed broadband Internet service to consumers and small businesses. Clearwire is utilizing next-generation non-line-of-sight wireless technology, developed by its subsidiary company NextNet, to connect customers to the Internet using radio spectrum, thus eliminating the confines of traditional cable or phone wiring. The tower transmits radio signals from a base site to a small, wireless modem the size of a paperback book, which easily connects a user’s computer to the Internet.
