MODESTO , Calif. (June 21, 2005) — Clearwire officially launched its wireless broadband Internet service in Modesto today when company and community leaders cut through a ribbon of coaxial cable and telephone cord at a celebratory reception at Galletto Ristorante near City Hall. Modesto is the first market in California to receive the company’s innovative service. Clearwire celebrated its launch by unveiling a unique partnership with the City, supporting various programs for local citizens. The company also announced its plans for expansion in the Central Valley area.

“Modesto is the first of many markets in California to receive Clearwire service, affording residents a better choice for broadband Internet service that’s simple, affordable and flexible,” said Joe Novotny, Clearwire’s market manager for Modesto. “Clearwire will break down the barriers of traditional broadband service, offering consumers high-speed Internet service without wires,” added Clark Peterson, Clearwire’s president of major markets. Peterson, Novotny, Mayor Jim Ridenour, and Parks and Recreation Director Jim Niskanen then cut through the cables with several pair of large wire cutters.

At the event, Clearwire announced it has formed a unique partnership with the city, including sponsoring the city’s All-America Modesto program and hosting hotspots in key public areas. The city and Clearwire are also working together to investigate ways that the city can leverage Clearwire’s wireless broadband service to enhance how it serves the community.

“We’re pleased to announce that Clearwire has formed a local partnership with the city to support many of their initiatives and to celebrate the All-America City program,” said Novotny. “Modesto is a great community to live and work in, and the All-America City nomination is a key indicator of that. We’re proud to be a partner with the city for this program and we look forward to working with them on future initiatives that will benefit all community residents as well.”

Clearwire deploys a next-generation, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) technology that allows customers to connect to the Internet via a signal sent across the airwaves rather than across wires. The company sends the signal from a transmitter to a specially developed receiver box that plugs into the customer’s computer instead of connecting to traditional coaxial cable or telephone wires. Customers simply plug the receiver into a wall outlet or power source and into their computer to gain high-speed access to the Internet from any room inside or outside their home or office.

“Clearwire is ‘next-generation broadband’ — broadband Internet service delivered to the consumer in a manner that is easier to get, set up and use than any other option currently offered,” said Novotny. “You can buy the service at select local retailers, take it home, set it up and be online in minutes; you can even run the connection through a wireless router, allowing you to connect multiple computers to the Internet in your home or office. In addition, Clearwire features plug-and-play installation — no need for a technician to come into your home and no need to load software onto your computer to make it work. You can even move the service from place to place inside our coverage area, which allows you to use Clearwire throughout your home, at the office or at your favorite coffee house. As long as you have access to a power source, you can be online.”

Clearwire service is currently available to approximately 95,000 households in the Modesto area. The service is sold at several authorized retailers in the area, toll-free at 888-CLEARWIRE and online at www.clearwire.com.

Modesto is the latest city to receive Clearwire’s service as part of its nationwide expansion, and is the first of many markets the company will launch in California. In the coming weeks, Clearwire will also launch service in Stockton, Visalia and Merced.

”We’re excited about providing the community reliable, broadband-speed Internet access with flexibility they’ve never had before,” said Peterson. “Modesto will be a great springboard for our future expansion in the Central Valley area, and over the next few weeks we will launch in Stockton, Visalia and Merced.”

In addition to providing residents and business with a new Internet option, Clearwire and the city are also working to use Clearwire technology to power Wi-Fi zones in key areas, including the plaza area outside City Hall. This non-traditional use of the product allows the city to offer residents free access to the Internet in public places.

Clearwire is led by Craig McCaw, one of the early pioneers in providing cellular phone service in the U.S. in the early 1980s. His company, McCaw Cellular, grew to be the largest U.S. cellular service provider and was later acquired by AT&T.

Clearwire drew national attention in the summer of 2004 when it announced it would deploy wireless broadband technology in select markets across the country. Since then, Clearwire launched its first market in Jacksonville, Fla. followed by Abilene, Texas, and St. Cloud, Minn. Earlier this year, the company launched service in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Medford, Ore., and with today’s announcement, kicks off its first California market.

About Clearwire
Clearwire is a provider of reliable, wireless, high-speed broadband Internet service to consumers and small businesses. Clearwire is utilizing next-generation, non-line-of-sight wireless technology, developed by its subsidiary company NextNet Wireless, to connect customers to the Internet using radio spectrum, thus eliminating the confines of traditional cable or phone wiring. The tower transmits radio signals from a base site to a small, wireless modem the size of a paperback book, which easily connects a user’s computer to the Internet.
