KIRKLAND, Wash. (October 11, 2005) — Clearwire Corporation, a high-speed wireless broadband Internet service provider led by telecommunications pioneer Craig McCaw, announced today a distribution agreement with Best Buy, the nation’s number-one consumer electronics retailer. Best Buy plans to offer Clearwire’s service in select Best Buy locations across the United States.
Clearwire will be available at participating Best Buy locations beginning Oct. 30, 2005.
“We are pleased that a premier national retailer such as Best Buy has decided to work with us and will integrate our service into their suite of offerings,” said Perry Satterlee, COO of Clearwire. “Our relationship will make it easier for Internet users to acquire Clearwire’s simple, fast and affordable wireless broadband Internet service.”
“Our relationship with Clearwire takes our assortment of high-speed Internet offerings to a whole new level by providing customers with a broadband wireless solution they can use as soon as they get home from our store,” said Wendy Fritz, vice president overseeing subscription services for Best Buy. “We expect Clearwire’s simple plug-and-play approach for the consumer will help differentiate Best Buy as the superior retailer of high-speed Internet solutions, both in the home, at the office and on the go.”
Clearwire allows customers to connect to the Internet via a signal sent across licensed radio airwaves rather than across wires or unlicensed radio waves, such as Wi-Fi, that can suffer from interference. Clearwire sends the signal from a transmitter to a specially developed wireless modem that plugs into the customer’s computer instead of connecting to traditional coaxial cable or telephone wires.
Clearwire service is a plug-and-play installation — there is no need to wait for a technician to install the service or for software to download. Customers can move the simple-to-use, affordable and fast Internet service from one location to another within Clearwire’s coverage area.
About Clearwire
Clearwire is a provider of reliable, wireless, high-speed broadband
Internet service to consumers and small businesses. Clearwire is utilizing
next-generation, non-line-of-sight wireless technology, developed by its
wholly owned subsidiary, NextNet Wireless, to connect customers to the
Internet using radio spectrum, thus eliminating the confines of
traditional cable or phone wiring. The tower transmits radio signals from
a base site to a small, wireless modem the size of a paperback book, which
easily connects a user’s computer to the Internet. For more information,
